Ume (plum) was introduced to Japan in the Nara period. The flowers blossom as the spring draws near. Unlike today "Hanami" in the Nara period was to cherish the plum flowers. In the older days, many poems were written after the plant. The more complexed shape, the more high rating for the tree. Creases and cracks on the bark, tells of old age. By the Edo period, around 250 different species have been established in Japan.
