This is one of Utamaro’s masterpieces. A young woman is playing a small glass toy. She is blowing on it so it makes a “popping” sound. The bright red checkered pattern kimono is absolutely sublime.

This series of 50cm square patterns is taken from the world of Ukiyoe.
